What Is Lymphatic Drainage & How Can It Help You?

If, like me, you’ve ever felt bloated, sluggish, or noticed puffiness in your face and body - whilst at the same time doing all the “good” stuff like eating well, drinking enough water, and exercising regularly - then your lymphatic system might need a boost.

For me, I always notice my face, hips and ankles are carrying a little extra fluid and I know it’s time to give myself a little extra lymphatic lovin’.

Lymphatic drainage massage is an increasingly popular treatment that helps reduce water retention, improve circulation, and support overall well-being.

But does it really work? Let’s look at what lymphatic drainage is, how it works, and why so many people swear by it.

The lymphatic system as a fish tank filter.

1. What Is the Lymphatic System?

Before we dive into lymphatic drainage massage, let’s quickly go over how the lymphatic system works.

There are a few great analogies that describe the lymphatic system really well - today let’s go with the one where the lymphatic system is the body's filtration system - just like you’d find in a fish tank. To keep the water clean and healthy and to allow the fish to live unrestricted and keep the tank unclogged by dirt and debris that accumulates in the tank - the tank’s filter removes waste from the water and delivers fresh, clean fluid for the fish to live in.

Your lymphatic system is like your body’s filter - one that’s made up of lymph nodes, vessels, and fluid (lymph). Unlike the circulatory system, which has the heart to pump blood, the lymphatic system relies on movement (through diaphragmatic breathing and muscle contractions) and massage to keep things flowing.

It plays a big role in removing toxins, excess fluids, and waste from your body (fish tank). And when your lymphatic system is sluggish or blocked, you might notice:
✔ Water retention & bloating
✔ Puffiness in the face & body
✔ Recurring colds or sinus problems
✔ Low energy, brain fog and disturbed sleep

That’s where maintaining a well-flowing lymphatic system and lymphatic drainage massage comes in.

2. What Is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

Lymphatic drainage massage (or Manual Lymphatic Drainage - MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic technique that encourages lymph fluid to flow properly, helping your body remove excess water, toxins, and waste more efficiently.

Unlike deep tissue or holistic relaxation massages, lymphatic drainage uses light-touch, precise movements on the skin to stimulate lymph flow without putting much pressure on muscles - apart from in the abdomen where we work a bit deeper as the lymphatic system is deeper there.

Originally developed in the 1930s by Dr. Emil Vodder, MLD has since become popular for its benefits in:
✔ Reducing swelling and puffiness
✔ Boosting circulation and detoxification
✔ Improving skin glow and health
✔ Supporting immune health

Let’s dive deeper into these benefits.

3. The Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage

✅ 1. Reduces Water Retention & Bloating

If you feel puffy after a long flight, a salty meal, or hormonal changes, MLD can reduce swelling and fluid buildup. Many clients notice immediate improvements in their face, stomach and often the legs - because lymph is a one way system and is literally swimming upstream in the legs and fighting gravity at the same time.

✅ 2. Boosts Circulation & Detoxification

Lymphatic massage helps your body flush out toxins naturally. This makes it an excellent treatment if you feel sluggish, tired, or want to support your body’s natural detox processes. Yes, the body is already detoxifying you - it’s just that MLD can increase the flow of lymph from around 6 pumps per minute to upwards of 10.

✅ 3. Improves Skin Health & Glow

Better lymph circulation means a brighter, clearer complexion. Why? Because once the lymphatic system has cleared the waste and debris from surrounding tissue, it’s easier and quicker to deliver nutrients and oxygen to skin cells.

✅ 4. Supports Post-Surgery Recovery

If you’ve had cosmetic surgery (such as liposuction, BBL, or facelifts), lymphatic drainage can speed up healing, reduce swelling, and prevent fluid buildup. Many surgeons recommend MLD as part of post-op recovery. I don’t offer post-op lymphatic drainage yet - but watch this space!

✅ 5. Strengthens the Immune System

The lymphatic system provides a home and transport to immune cells A healthy lymphatic system helps fight infections and illnesses. If you often feel run-down or get sick easily, regular MLD can help to support your immune function.

✅ 6. Relieves Stress & Promotes Relaxation

MLD has a calming effect on the nervous system. The slow, rhythmic movements help reduce stress, anxiety, and tension, making it a great self-care treatment. It’s not quite a traditional massage—since we use mostly lighter pressure—but many clients find it even more relaxing!
